The Social Policy Research Unit

Introduction

The Family Centre Social Policy Research Unit (FCSPRU) operates independently in the Hutt community of greater Wellington with its own Trust Board.

FCSPRU staff work together, and in collaboration with other groups, to carry out social and economic policy research and evaluation.  In keeping with the Family Centre aim to promote equitable cultural and gender partnerships, the FCSPRU employs Maori, Samoan and Pakeha staff.

In addition, the Social Policy Research Unit has gained considerable experience of inter-disciplinary and collaborative research.  Projects have been undertaken in conjunction with numerous other research groups, for example BERL (Business Economic Research Limited), Te Runanga o Ngati Porou, the Public Policy Group at Victoria University, the Department of Geography at Victoria University, and the Deprivation Index Project at Wellington School of Medicine.

The New Zealand Povery Measurement Project (NZPMP) is the flagship programme of research that has been continually funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST) since 1992 onwards in association with Associate Professor Bob Stephens of the Victoria University of Wellington School of Government. This project has provided an evidence base that has profoundly influenced social and economic policy directions in New Zealand with regard to income inequality, housing and povery reduction.

Our most recent large scale research programme, entitled EWAS (Enhancing Wellbeing in an Ageing Society), involves a partnership with the Population Studies Centre at The University of Waikato. This programme began in 2004 and is funded through to 2010. Another recently completed project involved a collaboration with the Department of Public Health of theWellington School of Medicine to develop a New Zealand Individual Deprivation Index (NZiDep). NZiDep was completed in December 2004.

Research Funding

The Social Policy Research Unit has been a recipient of substantial continued funding from the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST) and the Health Research Council (HRC) - leading sources of independent social science research funding in New Zealand.  A record of success demonstrates the ability to focus upon research questions of major importance to people in Aotearoa and to undertake high quality research.  A range of government and non-government agencies have also contracted research from the SPRU.
